As a Supervising Inspector, Elevators with the New York City Department of Buildings, you will lead a team of elevator inspectors responsible for ensuring the safety and compliance of all elevator installations, maintenance, and operations within the city. You will oversee inspections, interpret building codes, resolve technical issues, and enforce safety regulations. This is a critical role in protecting public safety and maintaining the integrity of vertical transportation systems in one of the world’s most dynamic urban environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of elevator inspection staff
• Conduct complex field inspections of elevator systems, escalators, and related equipment
• Review inspection reports and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal codes
• Provide technical guidance and training to inspection personnel
• Investigate complaints and accidents related to elevator malfunctions
• Represent the department in hearings and legal proceedings when required
• Collaborate with engineers, contractors, and building owners to resolve issues
• Maintain accurate records and prepare detailed reports on inspection outcomes

• High school diploma or equivalent; bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field preferred
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in elevator inspection, installation, or maintenance
• At least 2 years of supervisory experience
• Valid New York City Elevator Inspector license or ability to obtain within one year
• Thorough knowledge of ASME A17.1 safety code and NYC building codes
• Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
• Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and navigate mechanical rooms
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for field visits
